"Sunrise" is part of a series depicting native wildflowers along the Potomac River near my home. The paintings are a meditation on freedom and are closely correlated to the feelings of joy I experience while taking long walks there. Walking in nature is my ritual- and I wanted to make a book that looked and acted like a folding screen, a metaphor for my inward and outward experience. I am also intrigued by objects that sit freely on a surface and allow just a few hints of bright light and color to peak through and illuminate flowers (Orchids) floating in a liminal space.
