The Wall of Women (WoW) is an ongoing project conceived by Philadelphia photographer / artist, Anne Saint Peter, to honor the many talented women of all disciplines in the Arts.

Begun in the fall of 2008, the project includes black and white analog portraits of over 100 artistic women, including the visual arts, poetics, music and dance.  The intent is to showcase the many talented women in the arts – an often overlooked group.

“The project will go on forever,” says Saint Peter, “a kind of Judy Chicago ‘Dinner Party’ that just keeps evolving.”

Bio.

In 2007 I fell in love with the camera again. As a painter, I thought I was re-exploring the use of film with the intent to incorporate the images in my paintings. Instead, the photographs became my paintings.

Here, I discovered a whole new world of not just film, but older “alternative processes,” 150 year-old methods of transferring images to paper and metal, even glass. I then found the cameras that could help me incorporate these century-old methods into my work. Or shall I say, they found me —modern metal and electronic cameras were soon replaced with wooden and brass ones. Some cameras had lenses, others did not. But what I found was that the images were razor sharp with a soft and dream-like quality. I was entranced. 

As I continue to explore this wild world of photography, I have discovered a new appreciation of the “human factor.” No matter what I photograph, the results are always richer when the human figure is present, either as part of a landscape or as the main event, such as portraiture. This has become my main focus.

As I continue to find new ways of exploring the “human factor” and my relationship with it, I get to see a little more of myself in each photograph.
