Betty Leacraft

I consider myself a shape shifter of textile forms creating works which blend multiple fiber processes and surface design techniques. Currently, I am challenging myself to produce small works because most of what I create is quite large. I am fascinated by color and its cultural significance. The fabrics used for the work in this exhibit were hand painted with this in mind. While creating the work on display I was inspired by thoughts of my maternal grandmother who taught me to sew when I was a child, encoded ritual color symbolism remembered from a trip to Salvador-Bahia, Brazil, and improvisational Jazz music.
