About Eastern State Penitentiary Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone.
Delivery: The deadline is for arrival at the site, not for a postmark. Please mail your application with sufficient time to arrive at Eastern State before the deadline. Applicants may also drop off proposals at the site between 10 am and 5 pm daily. Grace Period: There is a 24-hour grace period for all applications. Applications received after 4 pm on Thursday, June 14, 2012 will not be reviewed. Confirmation: Please include a self-addressed, stamped postcard if you would like confirmation that your package was received. All applicants will be notified of the review committee’s decision by email in the fall.
