DEADLINE : Proposals due Monday, December 5th, 2011.
Arts and Artists Outdoors (A2O), is a ten-week-long artist residency program which uses free arts programming and community engagement to cultivate an appreciation of the natural and environmental assets of Philadelphia.
A2O brings together artists, youth, and the community to encourage a sense of stewardship of their environment through the creation of art. Each artist is paired with a selected recreation center, where he/she will lead art workshops for teens and community members, which offer hands-on art activities that highlight the natural resources of the center’s nearby green space. This unique collaboration is made possible through our partnership withPhiladelphia Parks & Recreation.

A2O Request for Artsist Proposals
An Artist Residency Program with
the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation
and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program
The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PP&R) are launching a collaboration that aligns PP&R’s objective to develop high-level practices and leadership in “out of school” activities with Mural Arts’ mission to unite artists and communities through a collaborative process that transforms public spaces and individual lives.
Arts & Artists Outdoors (A2O), an artist residency program, uses free arts programming and community engagement to foster an appreciation of the natural and environmental assets of Philadelphia. Each artist in residence will be paired with a selected recreation center, where he/she will lead twice weekly art workshops for teens and 3 family and community workshops. During these workshops, the artist will lead participants in engaging, hands-on arts activities that highlight the natural resources of the nearby green space and culminate in a temporary or permanent artwork that will be dedicated and housed at the recreation center.
Through A2O, it is our hope to offer artists and communities not only the opportunity to create sustainable and site-specific artwork, but to use their artistic vision and talents to create a shared feeling of community and environmental stewardship.
The spring session of Arts & Artists Outdoors will connect six artists each to a single recreation center. The program will run from March 12th, 2012 to May 18th 2012. There will be an initial week of community and youth engagement, followed by 9 weeks of youth workshops. Dates of the community workshops will be determined by both the artist’s and the recreation center’s schedules.
