There is a monster of a show at L.G. Tripp Gallery right now. David Foss has a solo show that is certainly up to the task of filling the considerable gallery space that usually hosts two artists.
Entering the gallery the visitors path is punctuated by three sculptures — white, red, and black — they are the energetic color palette repeated throughout the majority of the works. The graphic power of these paintings large and small is the first thing that that struck us. However, the lyrical All Things Must Pass is a surprising respite from the more aggressive energy of the geometric pieces.
The work is worth more than one visit. Don't miss it.
The show runs through October 16, 2010

artist statement from the gallery website:
My current paintings and sculptures are reactions to the dramatic changes that have occurred within our society and personally in recent years. I address these transformations through the use of symbols and metaphors in the creative process. Archetypes such as doorways, windows, houses and ladders serve as a common language. Working in a spontaneous and intuitive manner, I create an expressive atmosphere through color and different stylistic effects. This vocabulary ranges from heavy texture to light washes, geometric straight lines to organic forms, orderly structure to random markings and ambiguous words.
My art expresses the eternal cycles between the forces of order and entropy. Everything crosses the threshold of change leading towards new patterns and ways of being. As persons, events and things exit or fade away, there is also a continual rebirth of hopeful entrances into new forms of meaning and natural graces.
