Call to Artists : Under 91 Project, New Haven CT.

The Under 91 Project is inviting artist submissions to transform the space of the Humphrey St. Underpass. The goal of the project is to create a visually inviting and safe pedestrian passage between neighborhoods and to foster community building through public art. The organizers will raise money and provide technical and volunteer support as necessary to implement project. 

Deadline for submission is April 20, 2014. We will celebrate the project unveiling at end of summer 2014!

Submission Requirements: 

  1. Artist statement about overall proposal: How does the work transform the space and how does it engage community in the process? (Click here to view feedback gathered from the community.)
  2. Up to five images or short video of concept sketches and visualizations 
  3. Up to five images or short video of relevant previous work
  4. CV and Bio, website link
  5. Installation details and requirements, including timeline and concept budget (project fundraising goal is $15-30,000) 

Selection Criteria

  1. How does the piece transform the visual and experiential impact of the underpass?
  2. How does the project invite community participation in its conception and implementation?
  3. Feasibility of the project within the timeline and budget
  4. Artist or Artist Collective’s past experience with public art projects

Selection Process:

The artists will be selected in a two round process:
May 4th, 2014 - selection of finalists
May 18th, 2014 - public presentation and vote

A selection committee comprised of three curators and several community representatives will select up to five finalists. We are very thrilled to have the following members serve on the selection committee, representing a rich depth of experience with public art and curatorial projects:

The finalists will have two weeks to further refine their concept and address any technical concerns or feedback from the jury. They will then present their proposals to the public for final selection.

About the Humphrey Street Underpass

 The dimensions of the underpass are approximately 16' tall and 175' long.
